National Teachers Associates (NTA) Life Insurance Company provides life insurance and supplemental health insurance products for teachers, government employees, and emergency first responders. They’ve been in business for over 40 years, and currently partner with state and local unions to promote insurance products specifically tailored to meet the unique needs of teachers, first responders, police & firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and other government workers. In 2019, the company was included in the list of Ward’s 50 Top Performing Life & Health Insurers.
NTA’s parent company is the Horace Mann General Agency Corporation. They operate in 49 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In the state of New York, they do business under the name NTA Life Insurance Company of New York.

- Only available to select government employees. NTA Life Insurance policies are only available to teachers, first responders, etc. You can visit their website and request a quote, but you have to provide your name, phone number, email, zip, and employer name and wait for an agent to get back to you. Their website does not specify if you’re able to get coverage through their agents even if you don’t work for one of the government agencies they supply with policies.
- Limited policy options. In terms of life insurance, the company offers term and whole life policies. However, there are other policy types – such as universal life, guaranteed issue, and variable life – that may better meet your needs.
